Directions Unit: Director research- Otto Bathurst

Otto Bathurst

Otto Bathurst is an English director who has worked on 'Peaky Blinders', 'Black Mirror' and 'Hustle' to name a few.
Arguably his two most well known works are 'Peaky Blinders' and 'Black mirror' both being polar opposites of each other.

'Black Mirror'-"National Anthem" 2011

"The Prime Minister faces a shocking dilemma when Princess Susannah is kidnapped."
The camera work in the episode is fairly generic of the genre fitting with conventions of a drama, the most unique and visually striking part of the entire episode is when the Prime Minister is alone with the pig.
The mise-en-scene of the scene is clinical and cold, it only has TVs and a pig, this connotes the alienation of the Prime Minister as he and after he does something that is so strongly against social norms. He is treated as an animal, the fact that it is streamed live further connotes how de-humanized he has become.
The slow motion reactions of the general public as they watch very obviously connote the disgust they feel, it's a contrast to the normal speed joking around visuals making them stark and means their reactions are seen clearly.

This slow motion effect is also seen in another of Bathurt's works, "Peaky Blinders" uses slow motion in a fight sequence with the Shelby brothers.
This effect perfectly displays how capable and skilled they are when using the razor blades sewn into the peaks of their caps, this is also one of the first times the audience is shown the true extent of the use of the hats adding more weight to the scene. The slow motion of the brothers in comparison to the police raids in the next scene could be seen as "the calm before the storm" as well as denoting the  higher level of calmness and control they have over the police.
