Steal the style industry research: Social Media

Steal the Style industry research: Social Media

To concentrate my research into the social media side of fashion I focused on Instagram as it's a site that focuses more on the image/look of an image rather then the information behind it. The effect of this is that it allows the viewers to scroll through and be exposed to hundreds of fashion/style choices rather then getting caught up with text and captions. Instagram is also one of the ways we are advertising our show and is the main outlet for the images that we've taken.
Instagram is one of the most popular social media sites today now with 800 million users on its site.

Channel

Channel's account has 27.2 million followers world wide.
They regularly post their own images and collaborations with artists and actors.

The images shown on the account generally follow a theme, they either range from a monochrome black and white to pastel colours. As well as this the clothes actually featured in said images are themed too, for example in the images shown they regularly include jackets.
The effect of this is that it means the account feed is aesthetically more pleasing for the general public and means they are more likely to look through it.

Giorgioarmani

Giorgioarmani's account has 10.2 million followers worldwide.
Their feed includes a range of images from clothing to outlet shops. They also follow a theme of colour in their pictures. Their use of colours and framing in their images is visually appealing for an audience. The clothing they advertise includes a variety of objects such as sunglasses and suits.

Vogue

Vogue has 17.9 million followers world wide.
Vogue doesn't generally follow a theme of what it posts.
They regularly post about women and will sometimes put a post with men in but not without an explicit reason.
For example a post they have with men in it is captioned with "South, Africa like virtually everywhere else in the world, has a complex history when it comes to queerness" (1)

Over all this research has helped me in multiple ways:

  • It gave me a basic knowledge of fashion trends that are popular today
  • It allowed me to know what gets posted on these accounts/the way in which they get posted. This means that as assistant producer I can help the social media department liaise with the producers about how they want their images to look.
